4 Useful Apps By The Singapore Government You Should Know About

The Singapore Government has a 10-year masterplan to build an Intelligent Nation – an integrated government that uses infocomm as a catalyst to add value to the society and economy.

Already, we've seen government efforts in creating a more engaging society through the use of mobile apps. Be it in providing services or receiving feedback, targeting one of the highest mobile-penetrated nation in the world with apps is indeed a smart move.

From tracking calories and bus arrival times to locating clinics, we at GET.com highlight some of the useful ones here, including one that helps you GET more for your money!

1. ActiveSG App

This one ranks high on our list, because it encourages already active Singaporeans to use it to easily book exercise facilities and pay easily via the app. What we love is also the fact that each person receives $100 credit upon membership verification, where membership is free!

With our public sports facility already running at a very low cost, this $100 translates to 3 month's worth of MyActiveGYM membership.

Other member benefits include priority booking of facilities(no more booking badminton courts a month ahead!), complimentary trial classes as well as supplementary membership for youths below 16 years old.

Great for some parent and child bonding through sports, we think!

Other than giving you membership perks, the app works as an e-wallet as well where you can simply scan your NRIC from the ActiveSG Mobile App to gain entry to the public gym or swimming pool.

It's also easy to top-up your e-wallet using NETS, cash or credit card at guest services offices at the swimming complexes and gym. The app has already hit more than 100,000 downloads on the Google PlayStore, an evidence of its popularity with Singaporeans!

2. iDAT App

Are you someone who's into counting calories consumed, versus calories burned? If so, you might want to download the iDAT app.

This interactive Diet and Activity Tracker (iDAT) app is a project by the Health Promotion Board. It mirrors the functions of some of the popular meal and activity tracker such as fitnesspal, but gives it a local spin.

While you can download similar apps offered by overseas developers, you may find it a challenge to try to add Nasi Lemak to your meal options.

The great thing about IDAT is it provides nutritional information of local food and beverages, helping its users to count calories more accurately and better manage their daily food intake and activity output.

3. Mobile@HDB App

As the name suggests, the app is the mobile platform for the Housing & Development Board (HDB) Services, which makes for easy reading for people on commute.

Any potential home buyers will love this app, given that the simple interface makes finding information more straightforward compared to the HDB's website.

You can view recently-transacted prices of resale flats and how-to guides on flat-buying procedures.

4. myENV App

Do you have a heightened awareness of the air you breathe in, after the bad haze incident?

myENV is a free iPhone app from the National Environment Agency (NEA) that provides a one-stop information centre for anything you want to know about your surrounding environment – location of dengue clusters, air quality, as well as listing the food hygiene grades of some food and beverage outlets.

We can envision it being extremely useful during the haze period – no more crashing the NEA website!
