If the electrical appliances in your house were bought some 10 years ago, it may be time to invest in new ones. Technology has greatly evolved the way these machines are run and you can actually save some money by buying the right ones.

Change the lightings at home to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) ones. The CFL lights consume 75% less energy which could work out to be a substantial amount of savings for you throughout its lifetime.

Besides, there are energy star-labelled appliances which show the energy saving ability of each household appliance. Less energy consumption means smaller bills. As such, it may be a worthwhile investment to switch those commonly-used appliances (some examples include the washing machine, iron, rice cooker and aircon) to the newer energy star-labelled ones.

2. Install Smart Switches

There are motion detectors which can be installed to junction boxes. So once you walk out of the room, the lights and all other electricity appliances would automatically go off.

Not only do you save the hassle of looking for the switches in the dark, it also adds a tad of class to your home and saves you money. If you want to up a level, consider getting toggle switches where you can on-and-off lights and air-con units using your smartphone anywhere. Great way to check whether you had forgotten to switch that bathroom light off on your way out.

3. Don't Need Them? Unplug Them!

This is an easy trick to save lots of electricity. In case you didn’t know, electrical appliances continue to consume energy even when they are switched off.

The only way to stop them from feeding into your bills is to unplug them from the sockets when not in use. To have an idea of how much you can save by the simple act of unplugging unused appliances, on average it works out to be around $35 in savings each year.

4. Use Your Appliances Strategically

When you are ironing your clothes, it typically takes some time for the heat to set in and go away. So after doing one piece, switch off the iron and start on the next piece. The heat that lingers would still be enough to straighten another blouse. Just switch it on again if you feel the heat is lacking for the next one.

If you are heating small portions of food, opt to use a toaster instead of the oven or microwave. The toaster works faster and consumes considerably less energy than ovens and microwaves.
