From House Beautiful

It’s clear we are a nation of canine lovers as there are currently around 9.4 million pet dogs in the country. And to reflect this, many establishments across the UK are becoming more and more pet-friendly.

In line with this, the Dog Friendly Awards has been set up to recognise and reward dog-friendly places and businesses in the UK, across a range of categories, including best dog-friendly pub, hotel and high street store.

Perhaps one of the best accolades, however, goes to the best dog-friendly town or city. So far, 30 places have been nominated for the 2018 awards and the winners will be chosen by public vote.

Last year’s winner was Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, celebrated for its dog friendliness.

'Melton Mowbray has always been fond of pets but in 2017 this rural Leicestershire town has set out to become the UK’s number one pet-friendly town transforming the lives of its residents through a variety of projects that bring pets and people together,' one commendation for the town stated.

'Melton Borough Council and local business Mars Petcare have launched a range of initiatives to encourage pet-friendly tourism, improve the mental and physical health of the town through pets showing how pets can build stronger communities and helping pet owners to care for their furry friends in the best way.'

The closing date for nominations and voting in the Dog Friendly Awards 2018 is the 30th September 2018 and the awards will be presented at the Excel in London on 20th October 2018.
