Singapore is a tiny red dot and whenever Singaporeans get a chance and are able, they try to get out of the country. Are you constantly reminiscing about your past travels? Counting down the days to your next trip? Daydreaming of a peaceful island far from the madding crowd?
There are many who would gladly take a break from work and hop on the next jet plane, but feel constrained by the usual concerns such as time (specifically, number of days of paid leave), budget, and family commitments. However, these don't have to be barriers to your dreams – just opportunities to get creative.
To help you satisfy your wanderlust, we at GET.com have thought of 3 fun ways you can get out and see more of the world without breaking the bank (most of the time)!
1. Enroll In A Language Immersion Programme
For the highly pragmatic, going on a language immersion programme offers you a lifelong skill and something interesting to add to your CV, on top of the chance to live and study in a foreign city.
If you’re wondering how to go about finding an appropriate programme, start your search with the local universities of the country you’re interested in, to see if they offer any language courses for foreigners. Look out for any provisions for scholarships, financial aid, and help with securing accommodation such as student dormitories.
To stretch your budget, you could even do some part-time work while you study. However, make sure you check the terms and conditions of your student visa so that you stay on the right side of the law!
2. Volunteer At An Organic Farm
WWOOF, or World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, is a really appealing option if you have limited time and money, enjoy meeting new people, and – probably the most important thing – you like to farm!
WWOOFing means that you stay with a host farm in another country, and you help out with the farming work in exchange for food and accommodation. It provides flexibility for working Singaporeans because the duration of the exchange can range from a few days to a few months, so you can plan your days of leave accordingly.
One challenge is in finding a host farm whose expectations matches yours. The arrangements can be quite flexible, although the process of contacting and negotiating with the farms can take some time.
It’s worth it though, especially if you are looking for some things in particular, for instance if you want to bring children along, or you are only interested in specific activities like cheesemaking, animal rearing etc.
3. Live On A Boat And Sail The High Seas
This option is as adventurous and family-friendly as you can get.
No more waiting for airfare deals; you can take off for a short trip with your family any time you want!
The downsides to this are equally daunting, such as having to work your butt off to buy a boat (we wouldn’t recommend that you trade your HDB flat for one). Also, you need to do really solid research and training to sail safely. For long-distance trips, you should also consider hiring a pro to accompany you.
Good luck preparing for this, but it’s been proven possible: local celebrity couple Darren Lim and Evelyn Tan have been living on a yacht with their four children, taking short trips while they prepare to embark on a year-long sailing expedition.
