Both men later told their story in the HBO special Leaving Neverland — all allegations were denied by Michael Jackson's estate, which sued HBO over the documentary.

While his initial trial suffered from racism, causing a retrial (where he was again convicted), Berry himself admitted to transporting the teenager over state lines (though he said he thought she was in her 20s) and of taking photos of Escalanti and sharing hotel rooms with her, but denied any sexual interactions happened.
Berry was also charged with transporting 17-year-old Joan Mathis Bates across state lines, though he got off because both he and Mathis claimed to be in love, and thus, the purposes were not "immoral." In this case, he did admit to having sex with Bates.
