16 Businesses You Didn’t Know Were Listed

You may have patronised these businesses before.

Some may even be your favourite hunt.

I have excluded the famous, obvious and familiar brands. Examples are the telecommunication companies, local banks, SMRT, ComfortDelgro Corporation, OSIM, BreadTalk, Eu Yan Sang, Challenger, Courts etc.

I have also excluded the hotels, malls and properties.

ABR (SGX code: 533)
You would have remembered your first big bowl of ice-cream called “Earthquake” from Swensen’s. Well, the company behind Swensen’s Singapore is ABR.

At times when you wanted a caffeine fix but felt pretty sick of Starbucks, you might have ended up at Gloria Jean’s Coffee to enjoy a cup of coffee. Well, the people behind ABR made it happened!

Or satisfying your crave for curry puffs by visiting a Tip Top outlet. Yes, it is ABR again.

ABR has a wide suite of food and beverage offerings including Oishi Pizza, Earle Swensen’s and Hippopotamus restuarants in Singapore.

Japan Foods (SGX: 5OI)
Who could resist a sumptuous bowl of Japanese ramen, definitely not me at least.

The result? Trips to Ajisen and Menya Musashi ramen to fill that void of mine for Japanese ramen craving which are both set up by Japan Foods Holding.

The standards are passable and tasty enough though.

While I have yet to try all the food offerings under Japan Foods, however, I did spot a couple of Fruit Paradise outlets and their cakes look so ever-refreshing.

Neo Group (SGX: 5UJ)
Besides the various catering brands, Umisushi retail eateries are set up by Neo Group too!

At the time of writing there are already 25 outlets; expanding fast!

Select Group (SGX: 5FQ)
Another famous cater is Select Group.

What’s more is that the company owns a portfolio of restaurants which I have patronised before – Lerk Thai, Texas Chicken, Sheng Kee Dessert and Chinatown Food Street.

Hotel Properties (SGX: H15)
There was a reservation queue when Jamie’s Italian restaurant was first opened at Vivo City.

The Hard Rock Cafe outlets in Singapore are also owned by Hotel Properties.

QAF (SGX: Q01)
While it may not be the same for you, but Gardenia comes to my mind whenever the word “bread” is mentioned.

I grew up with that familiar-looking blue and red wrapper which almost resembled an American flag – the colour theme I mean.
It reminded me of the happy memories in the past.

QAF owns the Gardenia brand and operations, among many other brands which are imported into Singapore.

Auric Pacific (SGX: A23)
Another well-known brand for bread loaves in Singapore is Sunshine, which is owned by Auric Pacific.

Does it ring any bells when I remind you of that rich, milky and fragrant SCS butter? Irresistible.

Auric also owns Delifrance outlets, and Food Junction outlets which were acquired in 2013.

I didn’t know Chef Wan’s buffet restaurant at Plaza Singapura also fell under Auric’s umbrella of eateries.

Aspial (SGX: A30)
Lee Hwa Jewellery, Goldheart and Citigems are common names seen in shopping malls.
I wouldn’t be able to tell the brand positioning amongst them.

But I assume ladies would do a better job since diamonds are their best friends.

As a matter of fact, Maxi-Cash, a chain of pawnbroking stores are also owned by Aspial.

Dairy Farm (SGX: D01)
I believe most people would know that Giant and Cold Storage are part of Dairy Farm International Holdings.

Though few might know that Guardian and 7-Eleven stores in Singapore are franchised by Dairy Farm.

It should be noted that GNC and Ikea stores in Singapore are not operated by Dairy Farm.

Eastern Holdings (SGX: 5KU)
It appears to me that Motherhood magazines are popular among Singapore moms.

Eastern Holdings is the publisher of this magazine and the related Motherhood exhibitions.
Eastern also produces Golf and other trade magazines.

The company also operates as a property developer and offers storage services under the Selfstore brand.

GP Batteries (SGX: G08)
Most would be familiar with batteries that are of internationally renowned brands like Energizer and Duracell.

As opposed to these brands, batteries under the GP brand may not be that well-known.
Nonetheless, I find them to be durable and affordable!

And I can place my bets that most people may not know they are actually listed on the Singapore Exchange!

Haw Par (SGX: H02)
The famous Tiger Balm brand of ointment products are produced and owned by Haw Par.

Likewise, they also own properties under its portfolio which include attractions in Singapore such as the Underwater World in Sentosa.

Penguin (SGX: P13)
National Servicemen would probably never forget this scene, and also at the same time, recall the eerily familiar smell of sea water at the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

Recruits would need to board this fast craft to travel to and fro from Pulau Tekong.

These fast crafts are owned and operated by Penguin Intenational.

TT International (SGX: T09)
Most Singaporeans may have heard of Akira and the range of electronic devices offered under the brand, even though they may not have ended up in most homes here.

I remembered watching a documentary a long time ago depicting that the brand is doing reasonably well in Mongolia.

While researching on TT International, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the company even operates furniture stores like ModLiving, Natural Living, Novena and Barang Barang!

F J Benjamin (SGX: F10)
F J Benjamin distributes numerous fashion and time pieces brands in Singapore.

Apart from this, the company also distribute lifestyle brands like Sheridan (bedsheets) and operates the St James Power Station (club).

Wing Tai (SGX: W05)
Besides doing property development, Wing Tai distributes the following fashion brands in Singapore, and the popular Japanese fast food chain, Yoshinoya.

Have you spotted any other brands or companies which I have missed out?
