15 countries that supply maximum pornography online: How much does India contribute?

Renowned English novelist JG Ballard famously said, "A widespread taste for pornography means that nature is alerting us to some threat of extinction."

But the world is full of avarice, and that coupled with technology and societal depravity provide a perfect trigger for extinction, in other words a perfect platform for pornography.

Some consider the business of porn 'lucrative' and economically viable. Take for example, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty's businessman husband, Raj Kundra, who has recently come under scrutiny for allegedly running a porn-related business. Add to that the blurred lines between creative expression, erotica, adult and risque content and porn. In reality, however, it cannot be debated that hardcore pornography is similar to other genres.

In the mid-20th-century, with the publication of Playboy and Hustler, pornography began its corporate stint. The industry has since developed into an enterprise so big that people are unable to estimate its size. Like any other industry, porn has a dark side to it—labour abuse, content piracy, and a corrupt supply chain, for instance. But social taboo involved in this profession/business makes allowance for these notorious features to thrive behind the scenes.

Never before has there been such great appetite for porn as there has been in recent years and the consumers are probably unaware of how much of this content is being monetised. Among the growing industries of the world, the porn industry has been the swiftest, even overtaking streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon as surveys and studies have shown.

While the explanation for why this industry, which is considered extremely discriminatory (and criminal in most cases) towards women and minors, has been growing so rapidly remains a riddle for psychologists and sociologists to explain, the simple economic explanation is that of 'Demand and Supply'. Where there's demand for a certain type of content/service/product, there's going to be heightened supply depending on the price the consumers are willing to pay.

While India is certainly on the list of countries that consumes maximum porn as per a 2018 report, is it also on the list of maximum producers of porn?
