Given the massive demand for wireless data services thanks to Apple’s (NasdaqGS:AAPL - News) iPhone, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T - News) seems to be falling short of bandwidth. The company has formed a new policy of curtailing data speeds to better manage its data services on its network.

For an unlimited plan user through AT&T’s smartphone’s downloading data would now mean a struggle as the company has axed approximately 99% of the data speed in an attempt to limit the “unlimited” services.

The company’s new act is expected to upset around 17 million of its customers under the unlimited plan. Complaints have already started pouring in for speed slowdown after using only 1 to 2 gigabytes by customers. However, on the legal front, the company is playing fair as it has not debarred the unlimited plans as per the contract but only curbed the speed limit which was in any case, not a promised affair.

This has rendered smartphones worthless for most of the unlimited data users and the only remedy left for them is to switch to a tiered plan. This might sound pretty expensive for those who remain heavy users on unlimited plan but for some (wherein one uses around 2 to 3GB per month) the net impact would be neutral as the company offers tiered plan at a same price for limited data usage.

We believe that this can be a temporary relief for AT&T to better manage network congestion in busy areas but can not remain the permanent solution in a highly competitive wireless market. Although similar steps have been taken by other top tier company’s like Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ - News), the approach seems much relaxed compared to AT&T. Verizon is only cutting down by the minimum requirement to keep the networks free of congestion.

The issues now surfacing over bandwidth shortage raises doubts over the efficacy of the present wireless market, ready for the ongoing boom in the wireless data space.  Over the last year, wireless carriers like AT&T, Verizon and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S - News) have registered an upsurge in their data service revenues.

The companies are in a fray to obtain spectrum licensing and lure customers with deploying 3G and 4G services across their markets.  Most of the investments made are directed toward technological upgrade and entry into new markets as compared to capacity into the existing markets leading to poor standards of services.

Going back to AT&T, the company is working on a number of strategies to tap opportunities in the wireless data market and currently operates the nation's fastest mobile broadband network. By 2013, AT&T intends to extend its 4G network to the entire American population.

These plans only indicate technological advancement by the company but not many have been disclosed to resolve the current network capacity shortfall by the company. How far these issues can eventually impact the financial results of the company is yet to be measured but if these problems continue to persist we believe AT&T may lose customers impacting its churn rates.

The company is already competing with the aggressive pricing plans of Verizon and Sprint. Moreover, smaller wireless carriers such as Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile, MetroPCS Communication (NYSE:PCS - News) and Leap Wireless (NasdaqGS:LEAP - News) are also offering cost effective unlimited voice and data plans. This may negatively impact AT&T’s high-end handset sales and result in subscriber retention challenges.

We maintain our long-term Neutral recommendation on AT&T, supported by a Zacks #3 Rank (Hold).

As I stated on two other threads about this, unlimited data service that is throttled so much as to be unusable is not unlimited nor data nor service; I was with ATT years ago, have had a stint with Sprint, and am now with Verizon. They are all worthless as 'providers' of anything beyond grief.

It would seem to me that these companies would want to invest some of the millions their executives make each year in expanding their networks through expanded cell towers or mini-systems such as the cube that came out last year as a mini-tower of sorts, but can be put anywhere.

Sprint, Truley unlimited, and excellent customer service. This also gurantee's same bill every month, so no surprises. On less thing to think about.

All wonderful except their network is unusable in my area. It is so limited as to be worthless!!

I switched to sprint and use 7gb per month. They are the best. Excellent service.

when is Apple going to purchase a phone company (or two) or Clearwire to support their phone / tablet / cloud everywhere future...?

Deceptive at best. I have an UNLIMITED data plan ($30) and was just warned that I am approaching the top 5% and my data speed will be throttled when that happens. My data usage count was 1.6 GB when I received the warning. So, I am in the top 5% and an abuser of my unlimited data plan, but if i switch my plan to the $30 LIMITED (3GB) data plan ATT will have no problem with my current data usage.

Current data usage 1.6 GB under a $30 UNLIMITED data plan=too much data used
Current data usage 1.6 GB under a $30 LIMITED data plan=no problem

The only difference here is that under the current pricing ATT will never get an data overage charge, but if I switch to the LIMITED plan (which ATT wants me to) ATT has the potential to collect overage charges from me. I see a PR nightmare brewing. How will ATT ever make it out of last place in customer service rankings with these blunders?

It seems to me that ATTs UNLIMITED data package is false advertising and deceptive. Sounds like a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.

    Good bye ATT, hello Sprint.

This is the reason why I think all this talk about 4G is meaningless. Having wireless 4G speed would only mean that you will reach your data cap limit much sooner than before when you have only 3G. Once you reached your data cap limit of 2GB, the 4G phone will be much slower than 2G under the worst condition. So what is the point of having a 4G phone anyway? I think a 4G phone is only meaningful if the provider has a much higher data cap in the range of 10GB+ or a truly unlimited data; otherwise, the whole 4G thing is purely a market ploy.

Agree 100%. They will lose customers to other carriers because of this boneheaded move. Hey AT&#$%$ not 2008 anymore, when you could treat your iPhone customers like crap because they had nowhere else to go. It's time to start earning your money.

Yes, I expect Apple to purchase a phone company or someone like Clearwire and run their own game...

I can not stomach the bait and switch tactics of AT&T. They will never see another penny of my hard earned money.

Just some foreplay before they start raising the rates.............
