By Romesh Navaratnarajah: Toh Yi's grassroots leaders are proposing a new recreation space, inclusive of a new jogging track, fitness corner and redeveloped hardcourt space.
This follows a controversial debate earlier this year when 230 residents signed a petition against plans by the Housing and Development Board (HDB) to build apartments for the elderly on a site where the basketball court, jogging track and small garden are located.
According to petitioners, the site facing blocks 11, 12 and 13 is on a slope which is not ideal for the elderly.
But HDB said on 16 July that site clearing for the new studio flats are expected to begin by year-end.
Meanwhile, Bukit Timah grassroots advisor Sim Ann said that plans for a recreational space have been in place since January 2011 when the area qualified for the renewal programme.
Grassroots leaders have plans to build a new jogging track around the green space facing blocks 8 and 10 as well as a new fitness corner.
The new amenities will be a short distance from the site where the elderly studios are to be built.
At the same time, the estate will have more covered walkways, ramps and drop-off points. There are also plans to include an elevated walkway to the Bukit Timah wet market and hawker centre.
Over the next two months, residents can give their feedback on the plans before it is finalised in November. The majority or 75 percent approval is needed for the plan to materialise.
HDB also announced that it will build a children's playground and community garden at the new block of studio flats. Related Stories:Move over Marina Bay, Tampines has its own 'Supertrees'
