Penn National starts building $360M Calif. project

Penn National, Indian tribe start construction on $360 million casino in Southern Calif.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Penn National Gaming has started construction on a $360 million Indian casino in Southern California.

The development, called the Hollywood Casino Jamul, is expected to open in 2015.

Penn National is building the three-story casino 20 miles east of downtown San Diego, in partnership with the Jamul Indian Village. The tribe has held a gambling agreement with the state of California since 1999.

Penn National Chief Operating Officer Jay Snowden says the project will allow the tribe to revitalize its reservation while also generating revenue for local government.

Jamul Village Tribal Chairman Raymond Hunter says the casino is the realization of a decade-long dream, and will enable the tribe to become a philanthropic leader in the region.
