Mass.-based Raytheon resumes Navy radar job

Mass.-based Raytheon resumes $386M Navy destroyer radar job; ships built in Miss., Maine

TEWKSBURY, Mass. (AP) -- Raytheon Co. says it has received an order from the Navy to resume work on developing a new air and missile defense radar for destroyers to be built in Maine and Mississippi.

The radar is designed to be an upgrade of the Aegis Spy radar system currently in use on Arleigh Burke destroyers. The upgraded radar will be put in place on Flight III Burkes to be built at General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works in Maine and at the Huntington Ingalls shipyard in Mississippi.

The contract is for $386 million, with options that could bring it to $1.6 billion, for Air and Missile Defense S-Band Radar and Radar Suite Controller.

Lockheed Martin, developer of the Aegis system, originally protested the contract award to Massachusetts-based Raytheon but dropped its appeal last week.
