LTA unveils plans for Bukit Brown road project

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced its final plans for a new road that will pass through the Bukit Brown Cemetery (pictured). It shows that the LTA will minimise land take and impact to the surrounding environment.

Announced in September last year, the road will be built to minimise congestion along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) and Lornie Road during peak hours.

"Given the undulating topography of the area, which has several hillocks, a section of the road has been designed as a vehicular bridge over the existing creeks. Under the bridge, eco-linkage can be maintained and wildlife in the area can continue to traverse between both sides of the road," said the LTA in a statement.

Construction on the new road will begin in 2013 and will likely be finished by 2016. While construction is going on, the public will still be allowed to enter other parts of the cemetery not affected by development. Some 3,746 of the 100,000 graves at Bukit Brown cemetery will be affected by the construction, less than the previously estimated 5,000 graves. Related Stories:HDB makes revision to SERS scheme
