KakaoTalk Reveals $45 Million Revenue, $7 Million Profit
During his Coffee Chat session at our Startup Asia 2013 event, Kakao co-CEO Sirgoo Lee dropped a surprise figure on us: KakaoTalk made $7 million in profit in 2012, from revenues of $45 million. That's from just over 80 million users of KakaoTalk. While he declined to go into further detail, he did reveal that the app's gaming platform contributed a "significant" chunk of that figure. Kakao's undoubtedly had an interesting year. They've expanded aggressively into Southeast Asia and Japan, and held their own against competitors like Japan's Line and China's Wechat.
