Hong Kong paper runs ad insulting mainland 'locusts'

A group of Hong Kongers published a newspaper ad Wednesday insulting mainland Chinese as "locusts", amid seething resentment over rising mainland influence in the southern city.

The full-page advertisement in the widely-read Apple Daily also demanded the government take action to stop the "infiltration" of mainlanders into the former British colony.

It features an enormous locust overlooking Hong Kong's iconic skyline with the words "Hong Kongers have had enough!" and "This city is dying, you know?"

Online group Golden Forum funded the page-11 ad with donations from users of its Internet chat service.

The group "strongly demands... a stop to the unlimited infiltration of mainland Chinese couples into Hong Kong," it said in the ad, referring to the thousands of mainland women who come to Hong Kong to give birth every year.

Many Hong Kongers also dislike the shadowy role that Beijing plays in local politics, along with the flashy displays of wealth by mainland Chinese tourists who are coming to the city in increasing numbers to splurge on luxury goods.

Last month Italian clothing chain Dolce & Gabbana apologised to the people of Hong Kong for allegedly discriminating against them in favour of wealthy mainland shoppers.

The upmarket clothing chain had faced weeks of angry protests at its showcase Hong Kong store after a security guard allegedly told local people that only mainlanders were allowed to take photographs there.

In a similar vein, an audio file uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday claims to expose health and beauty products retailer Mannings for discriminating against locals in a sale of baby formula.

A shop assistant is heard telling a local woman that the sale is only available to people with mainland Chinese passports. A Facebook page calling for a boycott of Mannings already has 133 "likes".

"How can stores in our own Hong Kong discriminate against us... this is spread of hate mentality," reads a comment on the YouTube clip.

Over 100,000 people have "liked" a Facebook page dedicated to forcing the government to stop mainland Chinese women from giving birth in the city.

Local women have taken to the streets in protest at shortages of beds and soaring maternity costs.

"Officials are to blame for this mess that impacts each and every Hong Konger. Shame on them!" reads one comment on the Facebook page.

The "Anti-Locusts" campaign follows remarks by a Chinese professor in January calling locals of the former British colony "bastards", "dogs" and "cheats".

Kong Qingdong said Hong Kong people were "used to being the dogs of British colonialists -- they are dogs, not humans".

Hong Kong was returned to Chinese rule in 1997 under the One Country Two Systems arrangement giving it limited autonomy and enjoys civil freedoms not seen on the mainland.

The professor was furious at a video that went viral online showing Hong Kongers scolding a mainland girl for flouting rules against eating on the city's subway trains.

A recent survey found that more than 79 percent of Hong Kong people identified themselves as Hong Kongers instead of Chinese. More identified themselves as "Asians" than as citizens of the People's Republic of China.

A senior central government official criticised the University of Hong Kong's poll as "illogical", saying respondents should have been asked if they saw themselves as "British citizens" or "Chinese citizens".

Whenever we visit our friend's home ... we ensure that our children behave themselves and not run riot. When we visit another country (or studying abroad) we also behave ourselves, observe their habits (que, no spitting, don't talk loudly, no eating in public transport, no rushing for seats in public transport and giving way to elders, good hygiene habits etc) so that we blend in and will be treated hospitably. But some people from certain countries just do not do that at all and behave so badly that they are not welcomed wherever they go. Sadly many locals have started to behave like them too esp not giving seats to the needy and riding bicycles along pedestrian walkways like it is a race track. In the 1990s we hardly see a bicycle rider on the road at all .... until they came over in droves. Bicycle shops were closing down like crazy. These people may bring in some economic good to Singapore but the social costs is incalculable and hopefully the PAP will realise it, and that money and economic growth is not the end in life. But I doubt so as they are so fixated with money and economic growth at the expense of all else.

One simple rule: When you are in someone else's country trying to make ends meet and improving the lives of your family, show respect and know where you come from. The bad and ugly attitude that you refuse to let go and bring along with you will result in many locals detesting your presence. Do not try to act smart and be proud in someone else's country. That's all you need to follow and all will be fine.

When I was in Haikou China last dec, I was disgusted by their local's behavior, so rude and arrogant. Those came to Singapore are the same! They think they are better off than others. Not only the rich but even those working as cleaners also have such behavior. BTW, the Indians FT are the same, they walk and bang people as if the road belong to them.

Every country need some form of foreign helps, that is a fact! But for the Govt to open the immgration gate for just about any Tom, Dick and Harry is simply WRONG. I would love for our minister to come face to face and tell me that the people they let into Singapore the last 5 years are all TOP TALENT.
Common Singaporean can understand what this report is communicating.

Soon SG will become exactly like HK, They are flooded by mainland chinese and we are flooded by FT. The discrimination is already started in our working places. Soon u will see FT discriminate us every where, no matter in MRT or food court or any where. I have personally seen a FT snatch seats at Tampines Ikea eatery. The local parents leave their young children to look after their seat and then go n buy food. Then this FT go and pull the kid out of the seat and then sit down and start calling her frens to come over. A few Singaporean saw the whole thing and then stood up n shout loudly 'DONT BULLY SINGAPOREN!', "WE SAW THE WHOLE THING AND U BETTER GIVE BACK THE SEAT!' The FT at 1st dont admit but after a few more Singaporean come up and help, the FT gave up n left.
I don't discriminate FT, but we Singaporean MUST be united, if not our home land will soon really become FTs' land. We will be bullied, discriminated, and kicked out from our home land. Really no joke!.. Our gov WILL NOT help us, we must help ourselves!!

I think the situation is more worse than SG. Try to imagine your wife need to stay at corridor before childbirth because most of the beds were occupied by those PRC. You can't get a baby formula anywhere because most of them were sold to PRC. The baby grow up and enjoy all the welfare but their parents never contribute to your country. Some more they pee and shit inside MRT or along orchard road… That's what Hong Kongers facing now…
