Holcim S'pore to open first Center of Excellence in Asia

by Cheryl Tay

Holcim Singapore will open its first Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Asia, which was built with the support of the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).

The CoE is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and serves as an innovative solution "generator" through extensive Research and Development (R&D). Research will focus on the 3Rs of the environment, namely Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

The move to reduce the total amount of concrete in construction, and reuse as well as recycle concrete demolition waste and excavation materials is in line with Holcim's commitment to develop sustainable construction solutions.

Additionally, the solutions developments also aim to enhance construction productivity, customised value-added solutions and new materials technology.

Built at a cost of S$400,000, the CoE will be opened with its comprehensive laboratory facilities set to enhance R&D efforts in developing diverse green and value-added solutions like Structural Lightcrete and Imprintcrete.

Dr. Sujit Ghosh, Chief Executive Officer of Holcim-Singapore, noted, "The importance of sustainable construction in Singapore due to the lack of natural resources affirms our strategy. The Centre of Excellence will play a vital role in boosting the resource efficiency of the construction materials industry and enable us to push for more innovative and technology breakthroughs to better meet the demands of the market."
