Flashlight issued in cigarette promotion recalled

A flashlight distributed as part of cigarette promotion is being recalled due to fire hazard

WASHINGTON (AP) -- About 365,000 multiuse flashlights distributed during a cigarette promotion are being recalled due to a fire hazard that can occur when matches inside the device ignite.

Altria Group Distribution said Thursday that it has received 11 reports of matches igniting inside the flashlight and two reports of explosions. One person reported minor burns and another received treatment for injuries to the hand, the company said.

The flashlight was distributed this year through March as part of a Marlboro promotion. Altria Group Inc. makes Marlboro cigarettes.

The 3-in-1 flashlight, compass and match holder can catch fire when matches come into contact with a striker pad below the compass cap, the company said.

The flashlight, manufactured in China, is bronze colored and has five LED lights. It is 4.5 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. The flashlight was distributed with 20 wooden matches inside, and a removable foam insert between the matches and the striker pad.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the product. They should remove the matches and store them in a safe area. Consumers can contact Altria Group Distribution for a free replacement item of equal or greater value. The company is contacting consumers directly.
