Duke Energy told to submit coal ash repair plans

Regulators order Duke Energy to submit repair plans for leaking pipes at coal ash pits

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A North Carolina environmental agency is ordering Duke Energy to submit plans to repair leaky pipes at dams holding back millions of tons of coal ash at five power plants.

The state Division of Energy, Mineral and Land Resources on Monday issued Duke eight notices of deficiency for leaks at the Marshall, Riverbend, Allen, Buck and Cliffside plants.

Duke Energy has until July 17 to submit repair plans.

State regulators ordered the company to video the insides of pipes at the waste pits after a massive coal ash spill at a Duke plant on Feb. 2 coated more than 70 miles of the Dan River in toxic sludge.

Agency director Tracy Davis says the leaky pipes pose no imminent danger to the public or they'd have taken immediate action.
