InterContinental Singapore (pictured) bagged the coveted Green Mark GoldPLUS Certification for environmental practices from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore.
"We are honoured to be the only hotel out of the 42 recipients to receive the Green Mark GoldPLUS award by BCA. This is a fantastic achievement and a true testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment to environmental sustainability by our team," said Tash Tobias, General Manager of InterContinental Singapore.
Achieving the BCA's Green Mark GoldPLUS status was especially challenging for the 17-year old hotel, as adding new building practices could place additional stress on the existing infrastructure.
The hotel incorporated highly efficient chillers and upgraded its chiller plant to reduce operational costs and save on energy by 2,115,000 kWh annually, or a 14.8 percent improvement from the present Energy Efficient Index. The planned installation of new heat pumps is expected to increase efficiency levels in both energy input and hot water consumption.
The hotel will also use T5 and LED lamps to save on lighting costs, while motion sensors will ensure minimal energy consumption.
"Success achieved to date is our energy saving of 80 percent following the installation of full LED lighting in the Chinese restaurant, Man Fu Yuan, during its refurbishment last year," she noted.
"This Green Mark GoldPLUS award as well as the recent achievement of 2012 EarthCheck Silver recognition will continue to motivate the team and play a key role in helping our hotel deliver exceptional service to all our guests," added Tobias.
