Bay South Garden finally opens

by Cheryl Tay

The 54 ha Bay South Garden, the largest of the three gardens making up the 101 ha Gardens By The Bay (pictured) project, was finally unveiled yesterday in an event graced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Although the land could have been used for other more commercially-valuable developments, Lee emphasised that a large and beautiful park plays an important role to Marina Bay, much like Hyde Park is to London and Central Park to New York City.

Additionally, the project also supports Singapore's vision to be known as a City in a Garden.

"We are delighted to be able to finally reveal Singapore's newest national garden to everyone. But beyond the 'wow' factor, Gardens by the Bay is a place where families, friends and communities can take time out, relax, and create new and lasting memories," said Kiat W Tan, CEO of Gardens by the Bay.

"Our mission is to create a distinctive People's Garden that will be cherished and well patronised," he added.

The public can now visit the garden, which features Supertrees, huge tree-like vertical gardens with over 162,900 plants. The development also includes two Cooled Conservatories — the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. Various retail and dining offerings are also available.

In celebration of the garden's opening, a two-week series of events will last from today to 8 July.
