The iShares Barclays 1-3 Year Bond Fund (NYSEArca:SHY - News) suffered outflows of $1.08 billion on Friday, making it the No. 1 fund on IndexUniverse’s “Top 10 Redemptions” list. SHY’s outflows came a day after the fund pulled in $1 billion.
Stocks fell on Friday, as renewed concern about the eurozone debt crisis obscured encouraging U.S. news that the world’s biggest economy created 200,000 jobs in December. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 55.78 points, or 0.45 percent, to close at 12,359.92. Also, the euro fell below $1.27 for the first time since September 2010. The S'P was down by 3.25 points, or 0.25 percent, to close at 1,277.81.
The No. 2 fund on the redemptions list was the iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (NYSEArca:IWM - News), which had outflows of $538.4 million. The No. 3 fund on the list was the iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund (NYSEArca:EFA - News), which had outflows of $295.4 million.
Despite the hits to major funds, ETFs saw relatively modest inflows on Friday, Jan. 6. Overall, investors put $123.8 million into U.S.-listed ETFs on Friday, but due to the market’s decline, total assets under management declined to $1.079 trillion from $1.081 trillion the day before.
Friday was an especially bad day for bonds. U.S.-focused fixed-income ETFs had outflows of $828 million.
Creations
The No. 1 fund on IndexUniverse’s “Top 10 Creations” list was the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average Trust (NYSEArca:DIA - News), which had inflows of $345.6 million.
The No. 2 fund on the creations list was the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NasdaqGM:QQQ - News), which had inflows of $277.3 million. The No. 3 fund on the list was the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSEArca:XLV - News), which had inflows of $200.1 million.
