Rise of the Super PACs: U.S. Votes Essentially Bought, Says Reuters’ Felix Salmon

Follow Yahoo!'s The Daily Ticker on Facebook here!

If you had any lingering hopes that U.S. presidential elections are based on ideas and candidates, think again. More than in years passed, money is turning out to be the biggest determining factor during this race for the White House due to the unlimited amounts of cash flowing into the coffers that support the candidates, those things called super PACs. (See: Super PACs: It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's—Well, It's complicated)

The super PACs supporting the top Republican presidential candidates raised around $22 million in January and ended the month with $5 million more than the campaigns themselves, according to the most recent report from Federal Election Commission. The candidates' campaigns raised slightly less at $21.1 million. Mitt Romney's campaign raised $6.5 million in January and spent nearly three times as much; former House Speaker New Gingrich raised $5.6 million and spent $6 million while both Rick Santorum and Ron Paul raised $4.5 million.

Due to the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, individuals and corporations are now able to contribute as much as they would like to a super PAC. As a result, the money has not stopped flowing from some of the country's wealthiest and the candidates have almost come to rely on the financing in their favor.

PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel donated another $1.7 million to the pro-Ron Paul group Endorse Liberty in January. In total, the Silicon Valley insider has given $2.6 million to the Texas congressman's super PAC. Mutual fund investor Foster Friess continues to donate to the pro-Rick Santorum Red, White and Blue Fund after donating hundreds of thousands of dollars in 2011. And Forbes is now reporting that casino mogul Sheldon Adelson and his wife, who have already donated a combined $11 million to Newt Gingrich's Winning Our Future super PAC, is considering committing yet another $10 million to $100 million to the former House Speaker or some other candidate.

Without question, the Adelsons have single-handedly kept Gingrich's bid for the White House alive. But, the fact that one or two people has such a big influence on the campaign and general election begs the question: Can elections be bought under Citizens United? (See: Money & Politics: Freakonomics Author Gives "Big Fat No" to Idea Money Buys Elections)

"It is hard to say it is unconstitutional what is going on, but that doesn't mean it isn't broken," says Felix Salmon, financial blogger at Reuters who joined The Daily Ticker's Henry Blodget to discuss the latest campaign finance figures and the impact of money on the U.S. political system. "I can't think of any other political system in the world where votes are essentially bought." (See: Florida Primary: Romney Leads Gingrich by 14% After Bombarding Airwaves)

Salmon is intimately familiar with the elections across the pond in the United Kingdom. He says general elections there only last four weeks versus two years in the U.S. And in Britain, elections go off, "relatively smoothly with relatively small amounts of money," he explains. "[But] if you can't buy these incredibly expensive television campaigns in the U.S. you cannot get votes and so politics becomes entirely about who is best at raising cash so they can then turnaround and spend that cash on local television stations and then buy votes that way."

In Salmon's estimation, money will always influence elections around the world, but nothing like what we have here in the U.S. And unfortunately, he's not hopeful the tide will turn anytime soon.

"It gets bigger and bigger every four years and I've never seen it go down," says Salmon of campaign financing the U.S. "I see no way you are going to be able to reverse this. It is a secular trend."

Incorrect. The NWO global elite actually run the government. They bought it years ago.
    • whitehouse45 2 months ago
And you sit back and do nothing? At least try and do something like vote. Even if you don't get what you want at least you tried. Those who vote can talk if things go wrong, if you don't vote, you helped bring whats wrong into being. Doing nothing is what got us into this mess. Vote Ron Paul 2012

NWO got BAILOUTS by stealing. Late december 2011, US central banker Ben Bernanke said the real BAILOUTS were 7.8 Trillion and not 700 Billion TARP. Can you imagine 7.8 Trillion with a T ? So many happy local and foreign investors. So many happy corporations both local and foreign. POMO, TAF, TARF, TSLF, PDCF, TARP, Agency MBS, CBLS for CDS, Maiden Lane LLLC, QE1, QE2, Operation Twist, American Jobs Act....and coming soon QE3. What is Too Big To Fail (did you see the movie) ? Conspiracy. Conspiracy.

This ruling is so wrong and destroy's what was left of our election system. I have lost all respect for the Supreme Court. We tell the world democracy is the only way, while back at the ranch, we have no democracy. Our government has become a prime example of how not to run a country. Our country is toast. Greed and power seems to be all that matters.
    • dds 2 months ago
well spoken .it shows that our government is run by crook's , judges are standing by with their hand's out ,anybody appointed is looking to fill their own pockets .our government has become very low in every standard .

I never thought America's government would become as corrupt as any 3d world country, but it sure seems to be headed that way.

We send monitors to other countries to assure fair elections and report on the corruption that takes place, when are we going to do as much for our own country?!
    • jodee 2 months ago
Best response I have read. Simple, huh? It's ridiculous that we have to listen to the politicians slander each other for 2 freakin years, with most of it about each others personal life, no one talking about the real issues.
    • Tim 2 months ago
who monitors our elections???----the supreme court.. WOW
    • Creeper 2 months ago
Are you people really that stupid? God help us if you are. We monitor elections for corruption and intimidation at the polls not how candidates campaign, unless they are using strong arm tactics to force voters to vote a certain way.And the supreme court does not monitor our elections. #$%$ People seem outraged by a decision they do not understand. In fact they seem outraged by a constitution that grants us all free speech...and by that I mean unlimited free speech. It is really sad that there are so many in this country who seem so uneducated about the birth of our nation and the rights we have because we are humans inhabitting this planet and not just subjects of our government.

It is sick. Our federal government is so broken it has to be totally destroyed and rebuilt from scratch. Vote against all incumbents, both parties is the first step to get an honest group of effective problem-solving public servants instead of the nest of lying self-serving special-interest pandering professional politicians we have running the special favors mess we have now.

Scott, did you know that 33 states are on the official record as requesting an Article V Constitutional Convention? Only one more need come forward...These possible applicants are: Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, or Wyoming. Or, we could simply move directly into a Jacobin revolution...and on to the 2nd republic. I say this because everyone who is anyone in politics has already been bought by the 11000+ registered lobbyists working on $4 billion/yr budgets to buy them all. So, giving crooked pol A the boot to elect sold out pol B isn't the answer to much of anything except assured continued plutocratic hegemony.
    • Worker72a 2 months ago
Destroy yes but why rebuild it? Vote "None of the Above" always and everywhere. Government is not and cannot be your friend. The power to control others is always going to attract the worst sort of people. Be free.
  • Arnold  •  2 months ago
Pure stupidity. Votes are bought with promises that most politicians don't even believe themselves, people sell their votes for a dream that won't come true and it's all based on who can pay for the most air time and tell the best lies.
    • Arnold 2 months ago
Why else would Obama need a billion dollars for campaigning? He could just run on his record, as he is the incumbent.

Wow. Just think of how many new good paying jobs these corporations and uber-rich could have created had they invested those monies in their facilities, products and/or production.....
  • JohnGreybeard  •  2 months ago
It is crazy that we let billionaires work secretly behind the scenes to sell ideas and candidates like bars of soap. Even if it means amending the Constitution in order to end their (and corporations) being able to do so, we need to get elections being funded and run of, by and for the people who will most be affected by the elections' outcomes , and not by the uber-rich who can buy their way out of whatever messes they might create. All political campaign donations should be limited in size and should be public information.

Money, money, money. This is exactly why all of the developed countries are going down the tubes. Everything they do is all about money and power, and they don't care how many people suffer and are murdered, how many resources are raped, etc., in their quest for riches. These developed countries are now beginning to live the fruits of their labors - or karma (you couldn't get me anywhere near the U.S., Europe, Russia, Germany, Asia). Thank God I live on a small island in the Caribbean - just a speck on the whole planet. No resources to rape, just an abundance of clean food, clean air and clean water.

Votes can't be bought if they're not for sale in the first place. We once had a Constitution. We once had a functional non-corrupt congress. We once had presidents who weren't war mongers for oil and panderers for re-election. We once had a SC that interpreted the Constitution. We once had voters who were informed and voted. No longer.
  • Bruce  •  2 months ago
Money does buy votes. Why? Most people don't think, they react. Decisions are emotional, not rational. That's the way the human mind is wired from prehistoric times. Thinking is a recent adaptation to our evolution. We send people to school to teach them how to think but the schools have collapsed. Even most college grads can't think on their own, they have to be programmed. Money buys ad campaigns that stimulates emotional reactions to get people to vote for one candidate or another. The formula used is "vote for me and feel good about yourself". This is the foundation of all marketing which is "buy my product and feel good about yourself." The dumber America gets, the more influence ad campaigns have. Look at the comments posted here. Most posters are so illiterate that their comments are unintelligible. This nation is getting dumber all the time and I'm not talking about illegals.

America is no more, there is no more dream. Reality is that the big banks, businesses, etc have completely taken over our country and we let them. It is every man for himself. We continue to give away billions to other countries, support rebels in the middle east, etc, etc, etc, while people at home are hurting, losing their homes and are without jobs. Interst rates are so low it is not worth putting money in the bank. Retirement for Americans does not exist anymore as all the pension funds have been gutted. We are pesants once again just like 200 yr ago.

For those of you who ARE NOT serious students of History and Politics, let me try and summarize what has happened. For the first 100-140 (or so) years of our supposed Republic, the vast majority of people could not or did not vote. Let's take a look: Blacks, Women, Indians, those without Property, most immigrants, etc. By the time people with land and Blacks in the north and industrialized workers got serious about voting, the Supreme Court passed a law deeming Corporations to have the rights of individuals. Political machines and corporations and other wealth controlled most elections. By the time most people could vote and we had mass media (1960s), the Filthy Rich (corporate America and their henchmen and women, Plutocrats, etc.) realized that they could not control things UNLESS they used their 1) Wealth & 2) Media control to ensure that they could control elections through bribery and brain-washing. In other words, as the Potential for a More democratic society became possible, the absolute control by the Plutocrats over the system and the politicians became more complete. Thus, we finally have the supreme court giving approval to unlimited amounts of money available to buy elections with NO declaration of where that money is coming from. How to put this gently to the reader? In other words, the charade has continued for two hundred and more years where the powers that be, the Rich (corporations, etc.) control nearly everything through their connections, influence, lawyers, laws, judges, elections of friends and compatriots, support by Banksters and other corporate heads. Americans, on the other had, are brain-washed through a dozen years of education to become good little patriots, ready to go to war for the Plutocrats at the drop of a dime, and the Corporate Media pounds out a steady drum-beat to support this system which it gives the impression of being objective about while all the media clowns working for the moguls, take home millionaire paychecks all for prostituting themselves at the altar of their almighty Lord (money, fame, prestige). Okay, there is a lot here to digest and for those smart enough to understand it but still ready to dismiss this as the rant of a paranoid loser, tell me where I am wrong since, lord knows, anybody with wisdom knows it is right.

The Supreme Court fundimantally undermined the electoral process with its Super Pac ruling. It might be the worst decision the court ever made as it allows special interests to control elections. Roe v. Wade pales in comparison to what it has done.
  • Not-radamus  •  2 months ago
The Supreme Court conservative majority's activist decision to declare corporations (and unions) should be granted the Bill of Rights was the death knell to our democracy. It was an atrociously cynical, corrupt and wrongly-reasoned decision.
