“The Pitchforks Will Come Out” If D.C. Doesn’t Change, ‘American Gridlock’ Author Says

Follow Yahoo!'s The Daily Ticker on Facebook here!

Woody Brock is mad as hell and he's not going to take it anymore.

Brock, founder of Strategic Economic Decisions and author of American Gridlock: Why the Left and Right Are Both Wrong, hardly seems the Howard Beale type. He's an Ivy League-educated policy wonk with five degrees, including a Ph.D. from Princeton in mathematical economics and political philosophy. Yet he's pissed off just the same.

"We are mortgaging our children's future and I'm mad about it," he says. "I believe when this country takes lightly the concept of equality of opportunity, we're in real trouble. This is a country where anyone who works hard can own that Rolls Royce down the street, or at least has a shot at it."

By focusing attention on income inequality, Brock believes the Occupy Wall Street movement and its global progeny are on the right track, even if they're somewhat disorganized. "These guys are right," he says, referring to the Occupy crowd as idiot savants, French for "wise idiots." (See: Occupy Wall Street: 2011 Reflections)

Unless Washington D.C. gets its act together, stops the partisan bickering and reforms the K-Street system, Brock believes "the pitchforks will come out" by the 2016 elections.

Invisible Hand vs. Visible Fist

While the bulk of the book is about what he calls "commonsense solutions" (See: "Deficits Are Wonderful": Woody Brock Explains His $10 Trillion 'Domestic Marshall Plan') part of Brock's book is dedicated to the occupiers and his effort to tell them "how they are right."

Step one, he says, is reminding the protesters — and the rest of us — the beauty of real capitalism, which Brock says has helped improved living standards 30-fold since the 1700s vs. merely doubling in the 1000 years prior to Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations.

"People ought to know — real capitalism, with fair play [and] no rigged game is wonderful," Brock says. "You'd better worship true capitalism."

The problem, and why he's so mad (along with many others) is a fear our society is rapidly approaching crony capitalism.

"When the special interest groups, not the invisible hand but the visible fist on K-street, take over and you end up in a world with so many special interest groups so deeply embedded that no one gets anything done [and] no one represents 'we the people' at all," Brock declares. "In true capitalism...Goldman Sachs (GS) couldn't exist; no firm with the power to go to Washington and rig the game can exist."

The good — or at least hopeful - news is Brock doesn't believe U.S. society is past the point of salvation, comparing America to an onion that is brown and scabby on the outside but "inside is a moist, sweet thing."

And to the Occupy crowd, Brock has a message: Don't throw the free market baby out with the crony capitalism bathwater.

I like what the motto says above the Supreme Court in Washington D.C. It should be the goal of the government to enforce this motto, not take it upon itself to social engineer justice unless doing so promotes the goal of enforcing the motto. The motto is, "Equal Protection Under Law". Everyone is not "created equal" in ability but everyone should be equal under the law. The role of government is to level the playing field so no one gets an unfair advantage under the "rules of the game" whether it be capitalism or basketball. The problem is, and this has been true of every "great civilization", that a certain person or group of persons amass so much power and wealth that the civilization collapses. The Constitution uses the term "promote the general welfare" which means the welfare of everyone, not just a few.

Some people are more equal than others! Just ask Mitt Romney.

when people amass wealth, they become fearful about loosing that wealth. fear and greed are the two most powerful emotions... imagine them competing in the minds of our wealthiest...
    • Appletree 2 months ago
Well, the actual motto is Equal Justice Under Law....I take this to mean we are to be treated equally by Government. Levelling the playing field for one person may mean putting someone else at a disadvantage. An example here is that with massive regulation, small enterprise may be unable to cover the overhead of the regulation. This makes bigger business get bigger, from farms to banks, even while the govt. goal is to "protect" the smaller business, unintentionally or otherwise. This is not a simple situation.

The people lost control of the power a long time ago, I hope that we can still get it back. It's awfully hard to simply vote out the goons when they will just be replaced and the interests of them are so well protected.

You are exactly right. I don't think voting, talking and protesting works anymore. Thats why if I actually saw government building being over run by angry mobs on TV...I would actually feel better about the future than I do today.
    • Kenneth B 2 months ago
@Jason - agreed, but those in power are too busy placating the masses with unfunded mandates and benifits for that to happen just yet.
    • Jason 2 months ago
Kenneth: What u say...probably true. I read once that people only revolt after they have nothing to lose. I suppose that is how far it will go before real progress and change has a chance. Its sad really.

This is all about power over you folks. Either party. We have a 70,000 page tax code for the very reason the politicians wanted one. They wanted power over business and power over voters. They have used the tax code to pick winners and losers in business based on contributions to their campaigns and to pick their voters by income redistribution. Democrats wrote the tax code for 52 of the last 66 years.
    • BroE 2 months ago
Some say that "income tax" as applicable to wages is unconstitutional and designating it as such by the SCOTUS was a huge grab of power. Also, Wickard v. Filburn, Kelo vs New London, all SocSec related programs, Federal Welfare, most of Fed agencies. We're so doomed....

Uh...Amen! We should be both amazed and ashamed the pitchforks haven't already come out considering the present posturing and gridlock.

I like the idea of giving everyone in the armed forces a copy of Vince Flynn novel, Term Limits and having it actualized - to reorient the politicians to the oaths they took when they were sworn into office. I can fantasize can't I?
    • lowtolerance 2 months ago
WE tried. It started last fall. Too bad the rest of you have your heads so far up your #$%$ you didn't even notice it was time to move. Thanks for the fail.
  • Joe  •  2 months ago
Where do I join up Woody? I am sick and tired of feeling powerless against the politicians who supposedly work for me. If we can be ready by 2016, at least I will have some hope.
    • Jason 2 months ago
      I'm ready too.

Vote out good old boys and push for term limits

This is a good thing. Lets make the distinction between true capitalism and crony capitalism.

Crony capitalism is our real problem and that is what we need to fix.

The really big question is: how do go about it? What are the steps that we citizens need to start taking?

Another question: beware of the false solutions. There are people that think that those that make a lot of yelling are the ones with the answer. As you can see, making noise is not the answer. We need to figure the right way to do this.

Woody's only mistake is that the education level has dropped for 30yrs and people are now to stupid to know their getting screwed.

Do you really think they care about pitchforks, torches, or any type of protests at this point. The government / CIA. / multinational Kings know everything about everyone. You give them all your information about your life Facebook, Google and Twitter. Even if you don't, someone in your family does. They have cameras everywhere thacalt use facial recognition software so you can't hide. You carry around a tracking beacon called a cell phone which they can easily tap into, hearing everything you say at any time, and even access your 1080p HD video camera. Protest all you want. Your balls are in their hands for now on. You are the new slaves to the system.
  • chas  •  2 months ago
This guy is just realizing this? Man, talk about behind the curve. This crap has been going on for the last 40 years and has reached critical mass now. There is no way to fix it now, it's too far gone. The very people "up top" the ruling elite are the ones who ruined it for everyone and now they are scrambling to explain it, hide it while doing nothing for the rest of us. The fat cats like it this way, get it?

The "invisable hand" is very visible via political "donations" which are buying Government.
The 'hand" is Up the skirts of our politicians and the result is the demise of democracy
THE CURE: TAX political contributions above $1000 per annum per individual

Most Americans would not be able to tell you who represents them in Congress. As a matter of fact less than fifty per cent even take to time to vote in national elections. I have even come across people that didn't know that Washington was the capital of the US. We are in big trouble!

crony capitalism is not approaching. it is here. it is just in its infancy.but is rapidly evolving. but, the occupy movement and the working class can stop it in its tracks if we all get together, join forces and work together to stop it.
  • RICHARDR  •  Houston, United States  •  2 months ago
I don't know. Until there is a change in the American people, it's just going to be: Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
  • Time4change  •  2 months ago
We can win this people. We didn't get here over night and we won't correct it overnight. If we can get the people to listen, that means our friends and their friends and educate them on how to get this country back on tract we can get there in maybe 12 years. First thing is to vote out all incumbents, regardless of party. Yes they will be replaced with more of the same but we'll need to to this every two years until they get the message that the people are the government. We also need to make demands of term limits, bring the constitution back into the federal government and remove corporations from politics. There is a lot of work to be done and we can start it this year. We don't need to hear Republican this or Democrat that, for the most part they are all screwed up and deserve to be replaced. Stop your bitching and take back your country people.

The solution is easy: vote against incumbents. People have the power to vote politicians out and if we do, they'll pay attention.

Big gov is strangling small and medium sized business .Why? Because they are in bed with the bankers and big business . A controlled manipulated society is what we have left.

Talk, Talk, Talk. Nothing gets done by talk. We need to this or that, we are gonna start tomorrow, still nothing gets done, and nothing changes. People have to get motivated to ACT, then things will change. Obama got elected because he motivated people to ACT. The dems got shellacked in Nov 2010 because the Tea Party, Yes, the Tea Party motivated a lot of people to ACT. Obama also motivated a large portion to ACT because of his policies, and inability to make things happen with a dem controlled House and Senate. He spent most of his time pushing health care, and closing down the oil business in the Gulf after that mess.
Both sides are to blame; they are only about power and money. As long as there are people with big money who need special favors, and people who want that money, and the power that money can get them, they will always find each other. If we had people with honor and integrity in our government, all the money in the world would not turn them to "The Dark Side". But, where are we going to find these people, and how do we convince them to get into the race, when their entire lives and family’s will be savaged by the MSM, DNC, and RNC.
A large part of the blame should be heaped on the MSM for ignoring the truth, to print the spin that keeps obama from having to answer some very important questions about his past, and ignoring scandals such as Fast and Furious, and the green energy fiascos.
If you don't believe that both sides are together on the destruction of what was America to something that equates to the European versions of Socialist Democracy, here are a few quotes from eras gone by to help you see. They are easily checked.

    Norman Thomas
(1884-1968) six-time U.S. Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America observed in 1964 that the Democrats "have through the years taken over measures once regarded as Socialist, but then so have the Republicans but to a slightly less degree.

Norman Thomas and Gus Hall, the U.S. Communist Party Candidate, both quit American politics, agreeing that the Republican and Democratic parties had adopted every plank on the Communist/Socialist and they no longer had an alternate party platform on which to run.

Government is not reason; it is not eloquence; like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. George Washington

“We are socialist, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions". That sounds like something from the OWS, but actually from a Speech of May 1, 1927 by Adolf Hitler

The largest war in U.S. history is the "War On Poverty" It is also the most expensive and has balloned the amount of "Poor " on welfare to all time highs. It has employed emense amounts of people in Federal, state, county and municipal government and supplied them with generous pensions for this failed program. All of this is a matter of record
if you wish to look it up, it's all there. All of these people vote. Now who do you think they are going to vote for ?
