Scotland's former deputy first minister, John Swinney, announced on Thursday he would stand to succeed Humza Yousaf as leader of the country's governing Scottish National Party (SNP).The announcement follows Yousaf's announcement on Monday that he would resign as party leader and Scotland's first minister once a successor has been chosen to head the devolved government.
The yen fell slightly against the dollar on Thursday, reversing direction after a sudden surge late on Wednesday that traders and analysts were quick to attribute to intervention by Japanese authorities. The dollar was already on the back foot as Fed Chair Jerome Powell confirmed the central bank's easing bias, even as he reiterated that sticky inflation meant interest rate cuts may be a while in coming. "It shows authorities are very cognizant about the conditions as when they moved the dollar was already on the backfoot because Powell was not as hawkish as he could have been."
Thomson Reuters beat first quarter revenue expectations, lifted its annual financial forecast and raised its annual dividend by 10% to $2.16 on Thursday as it continued to invest heavily in artificial intelligence. The Toronto-based news and information provider reported an 8% rise in first quarter revenue to $1.88 billion, from $1.74 billion a year earlier. Operating profit, which Thomson Reuters said rose 10% to $557 million, fell just short of expectations of $559 million.
